چکیده

This paper proposes a backlight module which drives multiple cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) with a current mirror technique to equalize the driving current for each lamp. We first adopt a halfbridge parallel-resonant inverter as the main circuit and use a single-input, multiple-output transformer to drive the multi-CCFLs. Next, we introduce current-mirror circuits to create a new current-sharing circuit, in which its current reference node and the parallel-connected multi-load nodes are used to accurately equalize all CCFLs’ driving current. This will balance each lamp’s brightness and, consequently, improve the picture display quality of the related liquid crystal display (LCD). This paper details the design concept for each component value with the assistance of an actual design example. The results of the example are examined with its actual measurements, which consequently verify the correctness of the proposed control strategy. key words: backlight, current mirror, CCFL, liquid crystal display, halfbridge, parallel-resonant inverter, bipolar junction transistor, PFC

Intelligent and Green Energy LED Backlighting Techniques of Stereo Liquid Crystal Displays

As modem society has been reshaped rapidly into the multimedia information society, large size of display devices is required. Thin-film-transistor liquidcrystal-displays (TFT-LCDs) are one of the most popular display devices from small to large size. TFT-LCDs need backlight source, because they are not a self luminance device. Backlight for LCDs is becoming more important with growth of the LC...

Color shift reduction of a multi-domain IPS-LCD using RGB-LED backlight.

Color gamut and static and dynamic color shifts of a multi-domain in-plane-switching liquid crystal display (IPS LCD) are calculated quantitatively using RGB (red, green, and blue) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and cold-cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlights. Simulation results indicate that the LED backlight exhibits a wider color gamut, better angular color uniformity, and 2-4X smaller sta...

Low-Frequency Square-Wave Drive for Large Screen LCD-TV Backlighting Systems

This paper presents a low-frequency square-wave drive, consisting of a single high voltage converter, an ac lamp ignition circuit, current control devices and a single backlight controller, capable of driving an arbitrary number of parallel cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) with independent accurate lamp current regulation. Key to the architecture is a proposed capacitive coupling approach...
